A recurring exposure

The IEA describes the Russia–Ukraine dispute in January 2009 as a severe interruption of European gas supplies. In 2022 reduced Russian supply after the invasion of Ukraine contributed to a much wider energy crisis. Concentration of suppliers is the mechanism to compare.

A 2009 data point

The IEA reported that about 5 billion cubic metres of missing gas were replaced through storage, alternative routes and suppliers. That estimate describes the 2009 interruption; it is not directly comparable to the 2022 supply loss.

The difference

The 2009 event was mainly a time-limited transit crisis, while 2022 brought a far larger and more persistent reduction of Russian deliveries amid war. Storage, interconnections and LNG must be viewed in their own context. Neither case alone predicts future bills.
